After Central Asian countries became independent, the religious extremism has become a real threat to security and stability in these countries. Although called “island of democracy”, Kyrgyzstan faces increasingly serious religious extremism due to the following factors: tumultuous domestic political situation, fragile state control ability, backward economic development, outstanding social problems and influence of more active religious extremism in Central Asia.Currently, religious extremist organizations such as “Hizb ut-Tahrir”, “Tablighi Jamaat”, “Akramiya” are very active in Kyrgyzstan. These organizations have a lot of members, operate widely and are tended to be more violent. In addition, more and more women have joined them, the internet has become their important platform, and their activity patterns are also diverse now. Obviously, it is possible that religious extremism will make the security situation in Kyrgyzstan face serious challenges, even will jeopardize peace and stability of Central Asia at large and those of neighboring countries.This paper selects religious extremism in Kyrgyzstan as research subject on the basis of elaborating on the concept of religious extremism. Through methods include reference to literature, historical analysis, case analysis, the author explores characteristics of several major religious extremist organizations in Kyrgyzstan, analyzes the main reasons for their evolution, discusses their influence and proposes relevant counter-measures.
