In a multiple case study a comparison has been made between the Roman Empire and the U.S.related to the concept of relative decline. The aim of this comparison was to find what factors play a role in relative decline, which factors played a role in the relative decline of the Roman Empire and the U.S.,how military intervention influenced the economic health of both and what did they do to curb their relative decline. This study found that political, economic, military and random events play a role in relative decline. That weak institutions where the main cause of relative decline of the Roman Empire and changing economic circumstances led to the relative decline of the U.S.and that military intervention does not have to have a negative impact on the economic health of an Empire. That Rome tried to curb its relative decline by conquering more and more to pay for its Empire while the U.S.leans on its allies to maintain its power position. The Roman Empire and the U.S.are very different when compared but have in common high military costs and to heavy overspending.
