Bai Xiude(May 1915-May 1986),formerly known as Theodore-H-White,was an American journalist and writer during Anti-Japanese War.Then he became the U.S."Time" magazine journalist in China, and he was US News tycoon Henry Luce's right-hand man.He majored in history at the Harvard University, but by the guidance of mentor Fairbank he later engaged in news report. He arrived in Chongqing in April 1939 and started to work in the national government propaganda department, and later he went to the northwest of China physically so that he broke the Chiang Regime news blockade. Then he witnessed and reported the great famine in Henan province, and revealed the truth of "Stillwell incident",and he finally visited Yan'an in October 1944.Within his China six years of experience and observation in China he saw the nature of the Communist Party so he had a clear cognition. He saw the corruption and tyranny of Chiang kai-shek regime,so he changed his attitude of the Chiang regime and started to show sympathy and support to the Communist Party, and predicted that the kuomintang(KMT)would fail, and the communist would take over.Because he insisted on his views and position and reported the truth in China, after the end of the war Henry Luce, who was the editor of the "Time",and he went to their own way when he returned to America. In 1946 he and Annalee Jacoby published the book " Thunder Out of China " to report on the Anti-Japanese War to the outside world as a insider with profound influence. The full text divides into four parts to carry on the elaboration, specifically as follows:First part is the background of the Bai Xiude when he came to China. On one hand because the difficult and impoverished childhood created his hard-working personality,he laid the foundation for the journalist later he would become;on the other hand is that Fairbank's appreciation and help led him to choosing news report as his occupation at wartime China.Second part is that after he came to China he made contact with the kuomintang(KMT)regime and made his cognition and judgment. With the communications and contact details in history he made with the kuomintang(KMT)as the foundation,by virtue of the work in the northwest of the Propaganda Department and reporting the Henan famine and other experiences,he summed up and summarized his cognition of the kuomintang(KMT)regime.Third part is that Bai Xiude made his cognition and judgment when he went to Yan'an and contacted the Communist regime. He visited Yan'an through the investigation,so he realized the Communist Party of China had a more profound understanding and understood the essential differences between the two parties. And also he made a prediction of the future of China in wartime.Fourth part is that Bai Xiude's experience made an great impact in China. The six years in China not only had changed his personal destiny, but also made him understand the nature and future of the Communist Party, besides that he had opened a prelude to the American mainstream media to expose Chiang kai-shek's rotten regime.
