Ever since the end of the Cold War,the international community has seen dramatic changes in political, strategic and economic development. For African countries that are quite vulnerable in political, social and economic aspects, they have seen political, social and economic crisis breaking out once upon termination of the Cold War,which results in rampant violent confrontation and social or political turbulence.Africa thus has returned to center stage in international affairs. As a prime example, peacekeeping operation of the United Nation(UN)has accounted for half of total amount. The ever-worsening security issue and peacekeeping challenge in Africa are an intolerable burden to any single country or organization.Given that focus, the United Nation,African Union(AU),European Union,Group of Eight and other international organizations cooperate to deal with such dilemmas and foster long-term partnership, especially with the largest regional organization AU.When dealing with internal crisis and regional conflicts, both UN Security Council and AU Peace and Security Council share a common goal, which is to launch more efficient peacekeeping operation on the base of UN-AU peace and security coordinating mechanism. Thus far,the UN and AU have made great progress in peacekeeping operation and gradually established a deep,multi-dimensional and mutual partnership.Nevertheless, more problems remain unsolved, such as differences of approach to better beat off regional peace and security challenges or wide margin in peacekeeping ability between AU and UN.Focusing on peacekeeping operation of UN and AU,this thesis shall shed lights upon challenges for their bilateral cooperation and conflicts impacted upon their partnership.Smooth peacekeeping operation contributes to successful partnership.First and foremost, this thesis discourses upon evolution of UN-AU peacekeeping partnership.Taking Rwanda,Burundi,Darfur and Mali as examples, the Author divides UN-AU peacekeeping partnership into three stages of development, which include exploratory stage from 1990 to 2000,development stage from 2002 to 2010,and challenging stage after 2010.The Author explores the deepening developing processes during which the dominator turns from UN to AU and more members joined in.Moreover, the Author analyses challenges confronted by UN-AU peacekeeping partnership.Last but not least, the Author provides practical suggestions to enhance UN-AU peacekeeping partnership.
