Chang Naide was affected by traditional education in his early years. In the May Fourth New Culture Movement,by debating with Chen Duxiu,Hu Shi and others cultural celebrities,he began to accept Western culture and gradually break with the conventional culture.Around the May 30th Movement,he began to believe in the nationalism. The nationalism had become the carrier and hope of his revival of political civilization.Chang Naide systematically explained the theory of nationalism. The nationalism requires the establishment of a strong state power. However,if the state power is too large and it will lead to authoritarian dictatorship easily. So he put the liberalism as the core of the constitutional theory into his theory of nationalism, that is,using" democratic nationalism" instead of nationalism, hoping to improve the constitution and the rule of law to prevent power abuses. In order to make his own ideas accepted by the people easily,he also found modern factors from the traditional Chinese culture, putting the Legalism thought into the theory of nationalism, and put forward the "new legalism".To meet the needs of China's reality,Chang Naide put the popular professional representation system, the provincial founding, national socialism and other ideas into his theory of nationalism, trying to solve the problems faced by modern Chinese society, and put forward a series of political ideas for this purpose. His political ideology and his ultimate claim aim to achieve national unity, national independence, the construction of modern democratic countries and national prosperity.Although Chang's idea is limited,it still exists reasonable value.
