Research Of Development For The Discipline Of Urban System Planning In China

Historical review and experience summary is important since the subject of Urban and Rural Planning became first-level discipline.As the only legal type of regional planning,the research of development for the subject of urban system planning is of great academic value.However,specialized academic research on the development of Urban System Planning,particularly its new developments since 2000,is inadequate.Most of the existing research focuses on the development of practical work,theoretical research,technology and methods as well as school education are less important part of the concern.Research pay more attention to characteristics summary,while paying less emphasis on the development process and historical argumentation.Therefore,this paper argues that,there is still some space for improvement in the current study of urban system planning discipline in extending the time span,expanding the content area,in accordance with other aspects of deepening the view.Based on the above understanding,the paper takes the overall development process and the evolution of the urban system planning disciplines as research subjects,and divides it into four phases,including before the mid-1980s,mid-1980s to early 1990s,mid-1990s to the beginning of the 21st century and after 2005.With the holistic analysis framework concerning social development,planning practice,theory and technology,as well as education system,this paper analyzes the development process and its relation to the social and economic change of each phase.Finally,the paper concludes:1)"Urban System Planning" is a concept of dynamic evolution,which has transformed from a specific type of planning to a kind of planning thought emphasizing coordination.Its change has greatly motivated the transformation of Urban Planning Discipline into Urban and Rural Discipline.2)The evolution of Urban System Planning disciplines closely related to the transformation of China's overall development environment,and it has become the platform for different department to pursue interest,as well as the means for cities participating in and even reshaping the global network.3)With the gradual maturity thorough planning practice and theory,the development of urban system planning discipline has experienced a process from external reliance to the balance of the initial awakening and the external learning.And in this transformation process,practice play an important role,which also become a source of confidence and core strengths in the construction of discipline system with Chinese characteristics.This paper is organized as follows:Chapter 1:foreword.This chapter includes the research background,value,concept definitions and a reviews of the existing relative researches,as well as the phasing of the history of discipline of Urban System Planning.Chapter 2 to chapter 5:historical review.With the holistic analysis framework concerning social development,planning practice,theory and technology,as well as education system,these chapters analyze the development process and its relation to the social and economic change of each phase.Chapter 6:conclusion and discussion.The general evolution logic of the connotation and denotation of discipline,character attributes,theory and practice as well as the development process of education and are summarized and outlook on future trends of the discipline is presented in this chapter.
