Planning holds a central place in language speaking and writing. In this study, these are two principal types of task-based planning – pre-task planning and within-task planning. They are distinguished simply in terms of when the planning takes place – either before the task is performed or during its performance. The problems this paper is trying to solve are the comparative analysis of the effects of the two types of planning on junior middle school students' oral performance and the methods that students who are given the opportunity to plan before task use in the experiment. The approaches this paper adopts include experiment, interview and text analysis. The aim of the experiment is to verify whether the pre-task planning is more beneficial to improve the students' oral quality than the within-task planning in oral English, and to compare the effects of the two types of planning on the complexity, accuracy and fluency of oral English. At the same time, the paper summarizes the pre-task planning methods of the students in the experiment. The results this paper shows are that there are statistically significant differences in fluency, lexical accuracy and complexity between pre-task planning group and within-task planning group(P < 0.05).The data also shows that students who spend three minutes on pre-task planning are more fluent and complex in their spoken language.Through observation in the experiment and interviews with students after the experiment, this study divides the pre-task planning methods of the students in the experiment into three categories: mind draft, paper draft and spoken draft. The data shows that students are more inclined to the method of paper draft. The significance of this paper was that it came up with a pre-task planning method, and the second experiment proved that this pre-task planning method had a positive effect on the accuracy and complexity of the students' spoken language.
