The Effects Of New Words' Glosses On Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition In High School Students' Reading Comprehension

In recent decades, as one of the auxiliary in IVA, new word's glosses aroused numerous scholars'concerns. Researchers paid more attention to finding out whether different glosses have impacts on IVA. However, few studies focused on Chinese single or multiple-choice glosses influence IVA in reading comprehension of students with medium English level.Based on Noticing Hypothesis and Input Hypothesis, the paper shed light on the effects of new words'glosses on IVA in high school students'reading comprehension. Some questions are raised by the author in this paper:(1) Are there any effects of CSG or CMCG on high school students'IVA in reading comprehension? If yes, what are the effects? (2) Comparing the two gloss types (CSG and CMCG), which type is better in improving high school students'IVA during reading comprehension? (3) In what respect does the superiority of the gloss type (CSG or CMCG) reflect in improving high school students'IVA during reading comprehension?The 3-month comparison experiment was carried out in a high school of Changsha, the subjects were from two parallel classes of senior one in this school. During the experiment, participants were grouped into CSGG and CMCGG. The author adopted Nation's (1990) vocabulary test together with past year's and model reading comprehension of Senior High School Entrance examination in past years to testify hypothesis. Through SPSS analysis and classroom observation, the author discovered that after 3 month experiment, these two parallel classes showed an apparent change, that CMCGG are better than CSGG in the scores of reading comprehension.The paper indicated that CMCG can give a boost on both IVA and grades of English learners with medium level in reading comprehension. At the same time, it offers some implications to compile reading materials and enriches the research results in the field of IVA.
