A Research On English Reading Strategy Training In Senior High School

In the past decades, the philosophy of foreign language teaching has changed, which causes students, not teachers, to become the center of foreign language teaching. The activities of teaching and learning become more interactive and communicative. Students should not only master the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, but also learn how to learn a foreign language.Reading is an important language skill. A large number of studies show that reading strategies can not only improve the reading efficiency of students, but also improve their ability of reading comprehension, which promotes the development of their autonomous learning ability. New Curriculum Standards for English Teaching at Senior High Schools(experiment draft) points out that teachers should strengthen the training of language strategies. Therefore, it is the duty of English teachers to cultivate the ability to learn of students. And it is necessary for the students to be trained in reading strategies.The author investigated the strategy awareness of the senior high school students and application of reading strategies by means of questionnaire survey and interview. Two classes taught by the author are of equal rank. The reading strategy training based on SBI(Strategies-Based Instruction) was carried out in the experimental class, while the control class received no such explicit instruction in reading strategies. This strategy training, which lasted for 20 weeks, attempted to prove the applicability and effectiveness of strategy training based on SBI for senior high school students from quantitative and qualitative perspective.The research findings are as follows: the current situation of students employ reading strategies is far from satisfactory and requires improving as soon as possible. The awareness of the students reading strategies and the number of their employing reading strategies are positively correlated with the scores of their English reading test. The reading test scores of experimental class were significantly better than those of the control class. The number of English books that students read after class is much smaller than that of being expected. And it is true for the quality of their reading. Besides, the reading strategy training based on SBI has a positive impact on the performance of students in reading, especially on the low-proficiency readers.
