The reform and opening up has brought rapid growth of Chinese economy, as well as great changes of C hinese social structure. In the countryside of C hina, new social stratificatio ns grow unceasingly, and the degree of social differentiation deepens gradually. It is of great significance to have a scientific understanding of the stratification differentiation in the countryside of China, and to give further studies of this differentiation conditions and relations as well as living situations of different classes, which helps to understand the national conditions of Chinese countryside, to formulate the countryside policy, and to promote the progressing and construction of the harmonious new countryside. There are many studies of the stratification differentiation in the countryside by scholars, which, however, focus more on the discussion of the differentiation standard and the choice of differentiation units, but not on the mechanism of differentiation in the countryside. Furthermore, as far as the research method is considered, most research results are based on large statistical surveys, analyzing and discussing differentiation in the countryside by means of quantitative statistics, which lacks the qualitative research method relatively. This thesis teases systematically former studies, and analyzes new problems, new theories and new ideas growing with the social stratification differentiating progress in the countryside of China. After that, with the help of case study, J village in Henan province is taken as the case to study the respondents' occupations, living situations, consumptions and social interactions. With these further studies, stratification differentiation in J village is studied systematically. It is found that the stratification structure in J village is presented typically as pyramid- like structure, and the differentiation degree is low but tends to grow. After the observation of the living situations of different classes, this thesis reaches that classes are different obviously in respects of living situation, consumption and social interaction. With the analyzing of the relations of different classes, this thesis finds that the upper- middle-class villagers lie on the top of this structure, and they play important role in the government of countryside. At the same time, with the social stratification differentiation goes on, more and more problems begin to emerge, mostly focusing on aspects of politics, economy, society and thoughts. This thesis puts forward rationalized policy suggestions aiming at these problems.
