To accommodate to the new normal in economy,China is actively promoting the economic restructuring and industrial upgrading.With the constant improvement in the scientific and technological level,enterprises require more and more high-quality talents,which urgently request the higher vocational and technical colleges comprehensively improving the overall quality of the graduates by reinforcing general education.In this regard,the community colleges in United States have become the most prominent in the world.This paper,used literature analysis,comparative study and other methods,systemically studied the history,realities and key characteristics of general education in the community colleges of the United States and its significance to higher vocational and technical colleges in China.This paper splitter general education history of the community colleges in the United States into 5 stages:stray,transform,expand,weaken and strengthen,The process of credit ratio decreasing and subsequent increasing of general education course was confirmed,which indicates the paying attention-neglect-repaying attention history of liberal education in the United States,adapting to the changes of the country and requirements of times.This paper also studied the current situation of general education in the community colleges of the United States on educational objectives and curriculum,course arrangement and implement,appraise subjective and methodology.The community colleges in the United States have build up a perfect general education system that characterized by clear educational goals,rich educational content,multiple appraisal methods,and high pragmatism.General education in the community colleges of the United States not only trains high-quality talents for the society,but also improves the sustainable development of the students.To improve the overall quality of the vocational graduates and train technical talents recognized by the society and desired by the enterprise in China,This paper learned form experience of general education in the community colleges of the United States,and concluded that further strengthen the concept of general education based on the concept of people-oriented,refine the goal of liberal education and enrich the content of general education,scientifically evaluate the education quality,improve the integration of general education and professional education,highlight the local cultural characteristics,and lead the student to a comprehensive and sustainable development.
