Since entering the 21st century, the higher education in our country has faced new opportunities as well as challenges. On one hand, because the higher education in China has reached a stage of the popularization of entry-level, popularizing further the higher education and putting life-long education into practice have become in evitable trends. To the colleges in China, this is a great opportunity for further development; On the other hand, with the entrance to the World Trade Organization of our country and the trend of globalization, the higher education in our country also faces new international competitions. The higher vocational colleges play an important part in China's higher education and its quantity, as well as the enrollment, is over half of the total number of the common higher colleges. In fact, for the functions have not been got to be well done, the higher vocational colleges in our country have to face a series of problems. Therefore, learning how to improve their functions, to hold the opportunity and to greet the challenge, is quite important and realistic for the further development of the higher vocational colleges in our country. In this thesis, I select the community colleges in the United States as my research field, with the aim to improve and perfect the functions of the higher vocational colleges. Methods of literature gathering and comparing and analyzing are adopted in the thesis. The whole thesis consists of four chapters: It begins with the introduction of the developing history of the community colleges in U.S in the first Chapter. The second Chapter, as the main one of this thesis, it introduces the newly development of functions of the community colleges in U.S since the 1990s. Chapter 3 makes a concrete analysis of the current functions of the community colleges in United States. Chapter 4, the last part of the thesis, provides a reference for improving and perfecting functions of higher vocational colleges in china.
