College is an important period of time for a person to change from adolescence to adulthood. It's also a critical period for an individual to develop personality and stable character. A good physical and mental health is an important guarantee for normal life and learning. "Outline of National Medium-and Long-Term Program for Education Reform and Development(2010-2020)" put forward that to enhance students' physical and mental health and harmonious development, the ideology of "health first" must be firmly established. The Ministry of Education issued the "Curriculum Standards of Physical Education and Health(2011)" which take sports participation, sports skills, physical health, mental health and social adaptation as curriculum objectives of the New Standard Curriculum. Positive psychology as the new direction of psychological development advocated by Seligman and other scholars is widely affecting various research areas. The core of positive psychology is the mining and training of positive psychological qualities. Physical activity is an important way to cultivate the positive psychological quality. These positive psychological qualities in sports activities can be fully realized. To introduce the essence of the positive psychology concept into the college basketball reform could not only meet the need for developing good psychological quality for students, but also meet the needs of enhancing the level of basketball teaching. In this study, experiment, questionnaire, literature, mathematical statistics, Delphi method and logical analysis were used for the research which covered 392 students in four colleges in Haikou city.It researched and analyzed the quality of positive mental status of college students and the teaching status of optional basketball course. It fully explored the cultivation effect in positive psychological quality, participation in sports, sports skills and physical health by conducting positive psychological quality training and comparing it with the effect of traditional basketball skill teaching style. The conclusions are as follows:1. Current college basketball teaching pays too much emphasis on skills development and lacks of attention for student sports participation, exercise awareness, mental health and social adaptability. The implementation of the idea of the new curriculum is inadequate in teaching practice.2. Scores of students' positive mental qualities are far below the average level which lies in the middle level. Advantages of college students' current positive quality are social intelligence, curiosity, passion, faith, hope and humorous. Their vulnerable positive qualities are fairness, integrity, spiritual touch, teamwork, humility and creativity.3. For positive psychological qualities, they're significant gender differences between students. Boy's quality reflects in social intelligence, curiosity and full of passion while girls quality reflects in are faith, prudent and belief. The maximum differences between male and female students lie in the qualities of creativity, courage, perseverance, sincerity, love and goodwill.4. Age characteristics of college students' positive psychological quality show a growth trend with the increase of student's grade.5. Traditional style of basketball skill teaching produced a certain effect on positive psychological quality of students which have improved in four dimensions and 11 factors. Basketball teaching experimental has a significant effect on cultivating positive psychological quality as well as improving on all six dimensions and 20 factors.6. Positive psychology cultivation in basketball teaching promotes a better participation of students and achieves high satisfaction. Students' interest and attitudes for exercising have been greatly improved.7. The learning motion of the experimental group and control group of students is both very obvious. Their basic technical performances are significantly improved, and improving rates are roughly the same.8. After traditional-style basketball skills teaching, students' speed and power quality have been improved. After teaching in the experimental group, three qualities: speed, strength and flexibility have been improved. Positive mental quality training in basketball teaching has a better effect in the field of achieving the objective of body health.9. Through the statistics results and analysis, the author put forward that "to take the positive psychological quality of basketball teaching and research as the guide", "to make teaching workers positive psychological quality as the foundation", " to give priority to carry out active class teaching ", "to put the real time, three-dimensional teaching reflection and summary as supplement",thus to realize the role of college basketball elective course on the cultivation of students' positive psychological quality as well as put forward suggestions for the further development of optimization.
