With the development of science and technology, multimedia applied in English teaching has become an educational trend. Vocabulary is the foundation of good English in English teaching. English listening, speaking, reading, and writing can't carry on without the quantity of vocabulary. Multimedia assisted vocabulary teaching is an important way for students to learn vocabulary. As the New English Curriculum Standards has put forward higher requirements for English vocabulary teaching in junior middle schools, how will the teachers apply multimedia effectively in vocabulary teaching in junior middle school? It has become the focus of English vocabulary teaching. However, the existing research is lacking in empirical study.Therefore, this thesis is devoted to carrying out a deeper investigation into the current situation of applying multimedia in English vocabulary teaching in junior middle schools. In this study, the teaching experiment was conducted in Jünan No.6 Junior Middle School. During the teaching experiment, the author arranged an experimental class and a controlled class. The author also made two questionnaires before the experiment. They aimed to know the attitude of students and teachers about multimedia teaching; and they attempted to find out the factors which affect the efficiency of students in vocabulary learning. The traditional teaching method was applied in the controlled class featured in writing the content of the textbook directly on the blackboard. In contrast, in experimental class, the teacher applied multimedia with situational teaching method, association teaching method, and context teaching method in the process of teaching vocabulary.The teaching experiment was lasted for a semester. This thesis compared and analyzed the vocabulary test scores of the two classes, which proved the teaching experiment is feasible. The analysis of the results shows that the students' learning interest were substantially improved in the experimental class. Their vocabulary test scores is higher than the controlled one which proves that the vocabulary teaching model has a positive impact on English vocabulary teaching. Meanwhile, it also shows that this study has a guiding significance for English vocabulary teaching.This thesis consists of six chapters. Chapter One is a brief introduction of the whole research, including research background, research significance, research questions, research methods and research structure. Chapter Two is literature review, which includes the current research situation of multimedia teaching applied in vocabulary teaching both at home and abroad. Chapter Three is mainly about the theoretical framework, in which constructivist learning theory and cognitive learning theory are mentioned. Chapter Four relates to the research design. Chapter Five mainly focuses on the analysis of the data collected from the questionnaires and tests. The last chapter draws a conclusion of the research, which shows the major findings, the limitation of this research, and the suggestions for future research.
