Yan-Li school was an important academic school, which emerged in the early period of the Qing Dynasty in Baoding, Hebei Province. Its founders were Yan Yuan and Li Gong, and the latter was the disciple of the former. The school was famous for its firm Practical Learning, which had a huge influence on society at that time and aftertime. What's more, Education thought is the most valuable of numerous thoughts Yan-Li school contains. With the principle of pragmatism, Yan-Li school put forward Macro-conceive of education and specific ideas of educational objectives, contents, management and approaches, which were different from other educational ideas at that time. Meanwhile the educational philosopher of Yan-Li school went beyond restraints of the time and corresponded to the educational needs of modern society, so they had a modern significance. This paper focuses on this, analyzes the modernity of Yan-Li school's thoughts of education and taps its contemporary value, making Yan-Li school regain its vitality. This is also an attempt to the modernization of Chinese educational tradition.In this paper, it applies three manners such as historical research method, theory methodology and comparative approach. And the paper can be divided into five chapters.In the exordium, the author explains the reason of choosing the topic and the significance of the research, defines the basic concepts involved in the article, describes and analyzes the research status of this topic, introduces the research methods, and points out the innovation and deficiency of the article at last.The first chapter introduces the internal and external basic state of Yan-Li school. The external conditions contain the social and historical backgrounds which produce Yan-Li school and its change of the scale of development. Moreover, the internal condition refers to the brief contents and the pragmatic features of Yan-Li school' thoughts of education.The second chapter analyzes the modernity of Yan-Li school's educational objectives. Considering the differences between people, Yan-Li school advocated cultivating expert Confucian Scholars and specialists, and achieved individual all-round development. Furthermore, basing on satisfying the needs of society and the individuals, the school companied the social standard with personal standard.The third chapter analyzes the modernity of Yan-Li school's educational contents. Yan-Li school inherited “Six Classics” study of Zhou and Confucius and enriches its connotation, making educational content comprehensive and practical. And during the practice process, the school used department instruction, showing off the scientific characters.The forth chapter analyzes the modernity of Yan-Li school educational management and approaches. Yan-Li school put forward educational system and developed a variety of rules and regulations in order to make teaching go on orderly under the system. And the school initiated respecting teachers, at the same time giving more freedom to students. Then the school also applied various teaching methods of language and practice in the process of teaching, embodying the comprehensiveness.The epilogue discusses the value of the Modernity of Yan-Li school thoughts of education profoundly, and elaborates the existence value of educational traditions in modern times...
