English picture books have been increasingly used in primary school as high-quality English learning resources in recent years.English picture books teaching also gradually become a highlight of the primary school English teaching in our country, many schools have tried to carry out English picture books teaching.Yuelu Experimental Primary School in Changsha is selected as the research object. The research gets information about teachers` understanding of English picture books teaching and English picture books teaching current situation through interviews and classroom observation. Based on the information,deficiencies of English picture books teaching are found,causes are clarified, appropriate teaching improvement measures are proposed.The thesis has been divided into four sections. The first section illustrates the research background, ideas, benefits,the core concepts definition, and the literature review as well as proposes the methodology of conducting this research. The second section mainly states the feasibility and necessity of English picture books teaching in primary school by children`cognitive development theory, compulsory education English curriculum standard, and potential educational function of English picture books. The third section, based on the investigation results, mainly introduces the problems of English picture books teaching in primary school, which includes the teaching objectives of current English picture books teaching in primary school give priority to language knowledge teaching, teachers ignore the students’ cognitive when choosing English picture books, the teaching process and methods always stay the same and meaningless. After analyzing the problems thoroughly, causes turn out to be that teachers know less about English picture books, the ideas of knowledgeteaching objectives are formed firmly in current English teaching in primary school.The fourth part is the important results of this research.After understanding of the English picture books teaching in current primary school, the research first try to develop diversified, hierarchical English picture books teaching adjectives of English picture books teaching in primary school:to enhance language sense and cultivate interest in learning English of students are the main adjectives in the lower grades, to cultivate English reading interest and form English reading habit gradually of students are the main ones in the intermediate grades, to enhance English learning experience and cultivate cross-cultural awareness of English of students are the main ones in the higher grades.Secondly, the research gives suggestions on the selection of English picture books in the perspectives of language difficulty, theme and content and matched sources of English picture books. Finally, according to the features of English picture books, the research puts forward strategies for English picture books teaching: create teaching situations based on the content features, improve repeat rate of the core vocabulary and sentence patterns in the story context, expand the story line based on the characters, all kinds of teaching activities like painting, acting out stories as well as expressing feelings freely can be carried out in English picture books classes.
