A Study On Middle School Students' Filial Piety And Their Coping Strategies

As the cultural treasure of the Chinese nation, Filial Piety is the core part of the Chinese ethical concept, handed down from generation to generation. With the development of civilization, filial culture also acquires its own new connotation of the times. We should promote filial culture, build up harmonious familial relationship and consolidate the filial ambiance which is vital in the contemporary society.With the advancement of modernization and reformation and open-up promotion of our country, the influx of western culture and thought has a greater impact on the Chinese traditional morality and social morality. Contemporary middle school students are also affected and there has been a phenomenon of moral decline and filial piety. As the builders and successors of socialism, secondary school students' ideology is of great significance. Therefore, this paper explores the solutions of filial education through investigation of the students' filial piety behaviors combined with interviews with teachers and students parents.The first part expounds the connotation and evolution of Filial Piety so as to draw its content. There exists a division between traditional and modern filial piety. The traditional encompasses seven layers of meaning including being grateful, supportive, careful, obedient and respecting to our parents with life-cherish and devotion to one's country in mind. Comparing with the traditional meaning, the modern filial piety also emphasizes its familial function, meanwhile, focuses on equality and independence. Then, this part deals with the entire course of its development till its critically inherited modern world. Finally, it summarizes the related literature and research reason, method, innovation and shortcomings of this paper.The second and the third parts analyze the fading situation of morality by the application of questionnaire and interviewing among 300 secondary school students. The main problems include disrespect, incomprehension and indifference to their parents. The reasons for the phenomena are listed in the third part like lacking of school education and home education, plus social influence in addition.As to the students' situation and their reasons, the fourth part puts forward the educational suggestions and countermeasures, such as arousing their filial consciousness by school education, leading their behaviors through home education and supervising their conduct under society. Social education, family education and school education are the three major components of education, through which joint cooperation, the problems of the contemporary middle school students' filial piety will be solved.This paper analyzes the contemporary filial situation of the secondary school students and proposes some useful references and advice on the basis of the researcher's education management background and her own teaching experience in a middle school, especially with the help of her tutor.
