Rural middle schools,because of lack of enough teacher,limited teaching facilities,students' poor family education,are different from regular middle schools in the cities.S tudents are academically weak in rural m iddle school especially in English.Yet the requirement for their English proficiency is now getting higher.The current situation in teachi ng and learning English in rural middle school calls for teaching reform in English class.In light of this,Peng Zhou Education Bureau asks for the implementation of group wo rk in rural m iddle school.As a result,the author 's school,Bei Junping Middle School is striv ing to put th is new way of teach ing into practice.Group work teaching is in line wi th the current learni ng modal advocated by curriculum reform and is conducive to the long-term development of students.More importantly,group work teachin g improves th e effectiveness of English teaching in rural middle schools.However,in many cases,group-work cooperative learning is far less effective and desirable than it should have been.The school,teachers or students probably do no t have a good understanding of the applica tion of group work.W hen using the group work,they don't know how to operate the group work effectively and efficiently in class.Facing the new ways of teaching and learning,teachers and students encountered many problems and challeng es.Therefore,the th esis tends to do som e investigation and empirical research on the application of gr oup work in English class in rural m iddle school.This research uses questionnaires,interv iews and classroom observations to find out the problems and affecting factors in the application of group work in English class in rural middle school and of fers some solutions and suggestions to the application of group work in rural m iddle school.It also te nds to answer questions as follows: W hat problems appear in the process of group work in the rural middle school? What factors affect the implementation of group work in English class in rural m iddle school and how?Through the study,the author found the following problems: no specific evaluation mechanism of group work,no specific group labor division,fake group activities,frequent use of Chinese,the lim ited time and the simple task types of group work,fe w capable students and capable students' dominance.Besides,this research also worked out the affecting factors including external factors(teacher's role,grouping,topic choice,length of time,evaluation)and internal factors(language aptitude,personality,learning style,attitude and interest).All these problems and factors should be taken into consideration in the process of the implementation of group work in rural m iddle school.The results of the whole research contribute to a be tter understanding of group work in rural middle school.It also helps find the reasons for the low ef ficiency of group work and get som e ways for the implementation of group work in rural m iddle school.All in all,the results of the research will help to promote the effectiveness of group work in rural middle school by dividing the groups reasonably,building up the ef fective evaluation,choosing the various topics and task types of group work and modifying the roles of teacher properly.
