Chemical experiment is the origin of chemistry. Chemical experiment plays a pivotal role in chemistry science development and in cultivating students' ability of innovation and the exploring spirit. In middle school education, much attention should be paid to students' ability of conducting chemical experimentsso that they could meet the needs of economic and social development in the future, which also conforms to the requirements of new curriculum stand-ards of chemistry.In the beginning of this paper we conduct a literature survey about the research background of chemical experiment in both domestic and foreign studies, and find that although we have made great progress in chemical experiment teaching domestically, we still have a long way to go. Under the instruction of new curriculum requirements and related education theory, we made an investigation about the chemical experiment teaching in four middle schools in Xi'an by conducting interview and questionnaire survey. The structure of this paper is as follows:the first part is the introduction, explaining the researchbackground of middle school chemical experiment teaching at home and abroad; the second part introduces the object of the research and the methods and its significance; the third part is the investigation about the chemistry experiment teaching in four middle schoolsin Xi'an City, including questionnaire designing and the methods and results of the survey; the fourth part is the summary of the problems of this survey, including the lack of resources, the attitudes of teachers and students, limited access of chemical experiment knowledge and narrow evaluation method; the last part is several suggestions on how to improve the quality of chemistry experiment teaching in middle school in Xi'an City, such as supplying more laboratory equipments,modifyingthe attitude ofteachers and students, convenient access to library resource and electronic reading room, promoting the micro chemistry experiment, and diversifying the evaluation system.
