Current Situation Of English Education In The Primary Schools Of Fu’an City:Problems And Countermeasures

With the integration of global economy, politics, science and technology, English has become an international language. In 2001, Ministry of Education promulgated the "Guidance on actively promoting English teaching curriculum in primary schools " which points out that all of the primary schools in cities and counties begin to set up English teaching curriculum since the fall of 2001 and all the primary schools in the villages and towns since the fall of 2002-For over a decade, in spite of the achievements made there have been multifarious problems exposed in the national advancement of English teaching for primary schools across the country with diversified teaching conditions of basic education.The main problems of the primary school English education in Fu’an city are:(1) Primary school English teachers require much more professional development. Primary school English teachers are generally young, and inexperienced engaged in primary school English teaching. (2) Teachers’ working pressure is heavy. Primary school English teachers have a large amount of work, they have to teach a lot of students, English teaching in primary education has not been given sufficient attention.(3) From the third grade to the sixth grade, the students’ interest in English learning has declined year by year, besides, they have not formed a good habit of learning English. Students generally feel that English is difficult so that by the end of the sixth grade most students are unable to reach the required secondary level curriculum standards.In this study, the author read a lot of literature, collect relevant information, and then combined with the questionnaire surveys and interview to investigate the current situation of English teaching in primary schools in Fu’an city. For data results obtained by studying further quantitative and qualitative analysis.This study reveals the problems in English teaching in primary schools in Fu’an and propose appropriate countermeasures to improve the quality of English teaching in primary schools in Fu’an city.
