Chinese characters are recorders and bearers of Chinese civilization,with each character itself containing rich historical and cultural connotation.Literacy was the foundation for reading and writing,and for children to learn cultural knowledge.The original intention of elementary education for literacy was not limited to improve children's volume of vocabularies,but was to cultivate their interests in learning characters and their characters cognition for them to widely experience character and cultural essence,in order to improve children's literate efficiency.In analyzing of children's cognitive features and current literacy education,it was universally acknowledged in the academic circle that a better literacy method fit for children's cognitive pattern and to bring the efficient learning pattern into play is in need.Currently,the major problem in the literacy education of preschool children was the cognitive gap between “shape of characters” and “meaning of characters”.Their memories of characters were short-term,with a very low efficiency.To solve these problems,a scientific means of association had to be introduced in characters' teaching for children to accept and for them to connect “shape” and “meaning”.Cartoon is an interesting and narrative expression which not only accorded with children's thinking pattern in cognition,but also demonstrated methods of word-formation in the development of Chinese characters.Therefore,this study applied cartoon to children's literacy education,which displayed clearly the “knowledge of characters” to children with cartoon images and narration.This thesis summarized the common ground of cartoons for children's enjoyment and their design methods by analyzing cases of existing cartoons of preschool and literacy enlightenment.In creating a cartoon,by combining shapes of characters with interesting cartoon images,and shapes and meanings of characters with cartoon plots,it clearly expressed the characters' attributes of “from meaning to understand its shape,and from shape to know its meaning.” It simplified and integrated the development of Chinese characters and theimplied enjoyment of culture,and expressed them through cartoon directly,so as to enhance the impression of Chinese characters for children,stimulate their interests in learning Chinese characters and improve their literate efficiency.
