At present,English writing teaching mainly attaches importance to grammar and vocabulary rather than discourse cohesion and coherence.Meanwhile,because students mechanically apply writing template,they lack cohesion and coherence in their compositions.Therefore,the researcher tries to apply discourse cohesion and coherence theory in English writing teaching in senior high school,which aims at improving students' English writing ability.The researcher puts forward two questions: the first one is: what are the problems students have in the use of discourse cohesion and coherence in English writing in senior high school? The second one is: what are the effects of the application of discourse cohesion and coherence in English writing teaching in senior high school? In order to testify these two discussion questions,an empirical study of English writing teaching based on discourse cohesion and coherence is carried out in senior high school.The subjects of the study are 75 students who are chosen from a senior high school in Shenyang.In this study,the researcher makes use of questionnaire,interview,and tests as the research instruments.Before the experiment,the researcher gives out questionnaire,makes interview and does the pre-test in both classes.Then she implements the experiment of the introduction of discourse cohesion and coherence in English wring teaching in the experimental class.After the experiment,the researcher carries out the post-test in both classes.In addition,the researcher collects data from questionnaire,interview and tests,and she uses SPSS to analyze the data of two tests.According to the analysis,the researcher summarizes the results of the study and draws the conclusion.On the one hand,there are some problems students have in the use of discourse cohesion and coherence in English writing,such as misuse of reference,confusion in substitution,lack of conjunction,disorder of structure and so on.On the other hand,the introduction of cohesion and coherence to English writing teaching in senior high school can improve students' English writing ability and has a positive effect on English writing learning.
