English reading teaching is an essential part of English teaching in junior high school,and the students' reading ability will influence their integrated skills of using English.And how to arouse student's reading interest in English reading teaching is a question that every English teacher must consider carefully.Howard Gardner,an American psychology professor,put forward Multiple Intelligences Theory(MIT for short)in 1983.The theory points out that everyone has eight kinds of intelligences and these intelligences connect with each other and work together in different combinations to solve problems.The theory emphasizes that teachers should take students' multiple intelligence distributions into consideration when teaching,and all the reading activities should be tailored to our students' specific needs,which is beneficial to mobilize the enthusiasm of students,enhance their participatory in the teaching activities and stimulate their reading interests.The thesis aims to study the effect of MIT-based English reading teaching in junior high school,and the author conducted a four-month experiment in Xinxiang No.10 Middle School.Two classes of Grade 8,totally 100 students,were selected as research subjects.The control class was taught in the normal teaching mode while the experimental class was taught based on Multiple Intelligences Theory.At the beginning of the experiment,an intelligence questionnaire was given out to subjects in order to know their multiple intelligence distributions,then the author conducted pre-questionnaire on students' reading situation and pre-test to understand the students' learning condition before the research.During the experiment,classroom observation was also conducted to observe the different classroom behaviors between experimental class and control class.After one semester,the author used post-questionnaire on students' reading situation,post-test,and interview to investigate whether the MIT-based English reading teaching can arouse student's reading interest and improve their reading proficiency.The results prove that the experimental class achieves obvious progress than the control class,and the reading interests of students in experimental class have been improved obviously,which demonstrates the effectiveness of MIT-based English reading teaching.There are also some research limitations in this study,such as short experiment time,limited research subjects and so on.But all in all,the thesis helps teachers in junior high school to design teaching activities appropriately based on students' needs,and provides acertain reference for applying Multiple Intelligences Theory in English reading teaching in junior high school.
