In recent years,students’ English autonomous learning has been getting more and more attention in vast rural areas.Students’ autonomy is a hot topic in English language teaching in countryside middle schools.The purpose of Quality Education is to cultivate the students’ innovation spirits and competence;it requires giving learning rights back to students.English Curriculum for junior middle schools states that the current focus of reforms aims at fostering students’ autonomous learning ability,urgently asks teachers and education administrators to create conditions to foster students’ learning autonomy.The thesis aims to cultivate the students’ English autonomous learning ability in rural junior middle schools.Under the guidance of the autonomous learning theory and the current situation of the students’ English learning in countryside junior middle schools,this paper aims at proposing some effective measures to develop the students’ ability in English autonomous learning so that students learning efficiency could be promoted.The students in Grade8 Class1 in MaZhuang junior middle school take part in the experiment.The learning materials are the textbooks of Project English published by Popular Science Press.A number of factors that appeared to influence students’ English learning autonomy were identified as: students’ English foundation,students’ motivation toward English learning,students’ learning strategies,English teaching methods,emotional factors in English learning.The results of the study contribute to a better understanding of how to cultivate the students’ autonomy in English teaching.Practical suggestions for English teaching and future research were also identified.In the daily classroom teaching,the author tries to create a relaxed and harmonious classroom atmosphere,inspire students’ awareness of autonomous learning,arousemotivation to motivate autonomous learning,optimize autonomous learning strategies,carry out the emotion teaching methods,and encourage group cooperative learning among students.After one-year teaching experiments,students become the owners of classroom learning,which gives a guarantee to students-centered teaching and improves the students’ autonomous learning ability.Through the comparisons between the pre-test andpost-test,pre-questionnaireandpost-questionnaire,pre-interview and post-interview and the teacher’s classroom observation,it is proved that the ways are very helpful to enhance the students’ English learning autonomy.
