An Empirical Research On The Effect Of Face Consciousness On College Students’ Public Service Motivation

Abstract/Summary:
In recent years,with the reflection and criticism of the "economic man"hypothesis and the traditional motivation theories,public service motivation as a new type of individual value preference has gradually become a new hotspot in public management research.Public service motivation is the intrinsic motivation of non-profit,it emphasizes the values of responsibility,loyalty,fairness and impartiality,and it is also influenced by many factors such as culture,system and social value.Therefore,there are both similarities and differences of public service motivation among different countries.At present,China is in the era of building a well-off society in an all-round way,development with many challenges,downward pressure on economic,co-existence of difficulties in employment and structural unemployment,unbalanced regional development and urgentiy optimized public service.In order to make effective use of the theory of public service motivation to solve the real public service problems,it is urgent to carry out public service motivation research in China’s localization situation.Since ancient times,the Chinese people advocate face,face is the symbol of self-esteem,reputation,status for them,and it is also a manifestation of the personality value.With the change of the times and the progress of social civilization,face culture is constantly enriched and developed,and on the basis of traditional morality,with the integration of some viewpoints come from some relevant disciplines such as psychology,behavioral science,management,a unique cultural phenomenon is gradually formed.In the social network,whether it is under the traditional pattern of difference sequence or under the interesting edge pattern in the new media era,face always affects people’s way of thinking and value orientation.Therefore,in the Chinese context,the study of public service motivation is bound to consider the face culture.For these reasons,this study focuses on the research hotspot in the field of public management,considers the research trends of cultural differences,then studies the put public service motivation under the unique Chinese face culture,and assumes that there is a significant positive relationship between face and public service motivation based on the existing theories.In the course of the study,according to the dimension division of the selected scale,independent variable face is divided into two parts:the requirement of face and the fear of losing face,while the dependent variable public service motivation is classified into three dimensions:policy making attraction,compassion and commitment to public services.The validation of the influence mechanism between face and public service motivation will be carried out from the dimension level and the constructive level respectively.First,we verify the positive correlation between the requirement of face and policy making attraction,compassion and commitment to public services.Second,we confirm the positive correlation between the fear of losing face and policy making attraction,compassion and commitment to public services.Finally,we calculate the factor scores of face and public service motivation,and again test the positive correlation between them.Additionally,the correlation between face,income expectation and public service motivation is further explored by considering the individual remuneration preferences and adding the income expectation as a regulatory variable.The research data are collected from the field investigation of college students in the Yangtze River Delta region.Based on the data statistics and screening,reliability and validity test,sample variability analysis,correlation analysis and regression analysis are carried out.Research results show that:there is a significant difference in face consciousness of college students in terms of gender,and professional,and grade;there is also a significant difference in public service motivation of college students in terms of professional and grade;in the dimension level and the constructive level,face of college students positively influences public service motivation,there is a significant positive correlation between requirement of face and policy making attraction,compassion and commitment to public services,we also get the same conclusion for the fear of losing face,the correlation between the face consciousness of college students and their public service motivations is also positive,namely the public service motivation will be higher for the men who require more face;the regulation effect of income expectation does not exist,namely the income expectation of college students does not affect the relationship between face and public service motivation.Finally,based on the above findings and considering the phenomenon of craze for civil service examinations,this research puts forward the following countermeasures and suggestions:guiding college student to set up reasonable face consciousness by differentiated approaches,specifying the college students’ public service motivation in multiple ways and cooling down the phenomenon of craze for civil service examinations by the education of value and professionalism.
