Since 2010,China has introduced all levels of teachers' training policies.Teachers' professional development has become the focus of attention and one of the central theme of contemporary education reform since then.At present,Chongqing is committed to building the western region of education.The teachers,as the builders of this cause,their professional development has been in the limelight.However,there are still many problems in making great progress.Especially,there are a few concerns about English teachers in ethnic minority areas,so are the native studies.This paper is based on the research and development of graduate students in Chongqing,which aims to understand the actualities and problems of professional development of English teachers in middle schools in Chongqing minority areas.According to the analysis of these problems and local conditions,the author has come up with some suggestions to improve the professional abilities and levels of English teachers.It is practically significant.This study takes three middle schools in southeastern Chongqing as the respondent,and uses the research methods such as questionnaire survey,interview and field research to analyze four aspects,including the basic information,the specialized knowledge,the professional competences and the emotion and psychological factors.In this study,80 questionnaires are given out and 78 valid questionnaires are collected.After analyzing the data by statistical tools,the author find these problems: teachers are not highly educated;their own desire for development is weak;regional government and schools do not pay much attention;language teaching knowledge reserve is not enough;teachers are lack of teaching and research awareness.According to the above problems,the author raises some suggestions.First,enhancing teachers' recruitment requirements to promote teachers' pre-service capacity;second,increasing training and exchange opportunities to strengthen teachers' after-school education;third,improving their teaching abilities;fourth,raising their awareness of scientific research.And some special measures are put forward according to the four aspects,such as creating more opportunities of national and urban training projects,encouraging them to obtain master's degrees of on-job postgraduates,establishing learning communities with other schools,carrying out shift classes and school-based training.Based on the special environment of the minority middle schools,this research comes up with suitable suggestions to promote professional development of English teachers in those places,which will help to improve their professional abilities and levels,to promote the reform and development of English teaching in the region,but also to arouse the attention of education in ethnic minority areas,so as to provide a reference for basic education and teaching.
