Relationship Among Pubertal Timing,Parenting Style And Drinking Behavior In Junior High School Students

Objective:To study relationship between pubertal timing and drinking behavior in junior high school students,and to expoler the moderating effect of parenting style in this relationship.Methods:1408 7^th,8^th,and 9^th graders in Hunan province were assessed using the Pubertal Development Scale,short-form Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran for Chinese and Teenagers Drinking Questionnaire.Results:?1?In the past 30 days,28.05%of junior high school students reported ever drinking.There was a significant difference on the gender,grade and place of birth in drinking behavior of Junior high school students in the past 30 days.Early matured group reported more drinking behavior than on time group,both in boys and girls.?2?In boys,pubertal timing was not significantly correlated to parenting style.And drinking behavior was significantly correlated to pubertal timing,father's rejection,father's emotional warmth,mother's rejection and mother's emotional warmth.?3?In girls,pubertal timing was significantly correlated to mother's rejection and mother's over protection.And drinking behavior was significantly correlated to pubertal timing,father's rejection,father's over protection,mother's rejection,mother's emotional warmth and mother's over protection.?4?After controlling grade,and place of birth,father's emotional warmth,mother's rejection and mother's emotional warmth had moderating effect on the relationship between pubertal timing and drinking behavior in boys.And mother's rejection,mother's emotional warmth and mother's over protection moderated the relationship between pubertal timing and drinking behavior in girls.Conclusion:?1?Pubertal timing was closely related to drinking behavior of junior high school students,and Early maturers had more drinking behavior than other boys and girls.?2?Negative parenting style increased the drinking behavior of junior high school students,while positive parenting style played a certain protective effect.?3?After controlling grade,and place of birth,in boys,mother's rejection increased the negative influence of early maturation on drinking behavior,while father's emotional warmth and mother's emotional warmth could buffer the negative influence of early maturation on drinking behavior.In girls,a high level of mother's emotional warmth could offset the negative influence of early maturation on drinking behavior,while mother's rejection and mother's over protection further intensified the negative influence of early maturation on drinking behavior.
