It is known that reading ability is one of the most important four basic skills in ELT(English language teaching)in Junior High School.In reading,however,there are some obstacles which are difficult to overcome,such as cross-cultural background,vocabulary,sentence patterns and the structures of the passage,etc.With the reform of the new curriculum in China,the problem of the worst of the student's reading comprehension is conspicuous.As for this,teachers may converse the traditional teaching method into the new one with the new curriculum concept------narrow reading.Narrow reading was proposed by Krashen in 1981 after the Input Hypothesis.It makes students decrease the anxiety and the reading difficulty and train their reading with interest.It can improve the comprehensive ability by reading the articles of the same topic or the same author or the same genre and by reappearing the aim words,grammar and the background knowledge as well.It has been studied at home and abroad,but it has not been mentioned with English teaching in Junior High School.Therefore,the author attempts to apply it to the English reading teaching to improve students' reading interest and make better achievements in reading.The thesis deals with two questions:1.Can narrow reading increase the students' interest in English reading?2.Can narrow reading improve students' achievements in English reading ?The study applies quantitative and qualitative analysis.The 80 participants of the experiment came from Grade 8 of the Junior High School of Song lingzi in the city of Chaoyang,Liaoning province.They were divided into two groups(the experiment class and the control class).Each class has 40 students.The experiment lasted for 16 weeks.The students in EC were taught with narrow reading,while those in CC still were taught in traditional teaching approach.The experiment data were collected through questionnaire,tests and interview.The test papers used were chosen from the five-city joint tests of Chaoyang.The data were analyzed by SPSS after the experiment.The experiment results showed that the narrow reading increased students' English reading interest as well as English reading comprehension grades.It is acknowledged that there are still some disadvantages in the research.For example,the author takes the empirical study mainly in narrow reading in traveling respect.The empirical data shows the success with the narrow reading.Yet,there is much room to be improved in the further research.It is certain that it is feasible for students to increase their interests and improve their reading ability with narrowing reading according to the data analysis although there are still some disadvantages in credibility.
