A Narrative Study On Stress And Coping In Mothers Of Deaf Children With Cochlea Implantation

While raising the deaf children with cochlea implantation,the mother as the primary minder,will suffer great pressure and test.And what difficulties will they face?How to they adjust themselves?This study will explore from the perspective of psychological stress and coping.In this paper,we adopt the method of narrative research,through the interview with six mothers of deaf children with cochlea implantation,record their experiences and thought while raising their children,to reveal their condition and development features of stress and coping.The research conclusions are as follows:First,the stressors of mothers of deaf children with cochlea implantation include:the fact with child's hearing impairment,heavy economic burden,the cognition errors of cochlear,the long rehabilitation process,the limited information and resource,the poor welfare guarantee,the educational difficulties,the tensional family relationship,other people's negative judgments,the major change in life and the loss of meaning of life.Second,the stress reaction of these mothers include psychic reaction and physical reaction.And the psychic reaction embodies in two aspects:emotion,cognition and behavior.Thirdly,the coping pattern can be divided into three kinds:emotion-focused coping,problem-focused coping and meaning-focused coping.Fourth,the common strategies of these mothers for coping with stress include positive strategies and negative strategies.The positive strategies mainly include seeking support,emotion management,positive re-cognition and re-evaluation;The negative strategies mainly include escape and fantasy,unreasonable attribution,depressed themselves and yield to fate negatively.Fifth,the influence factors of the coping mechanism mainly include psychological characteristics,external environment,stress nature,maternal strength and educational level.Sixth,the practical problems include:poor coping strategy,passive coping process,poor coping result and lack of psychological assistance.Seventh,with the development and changing of the stress and coping,the main characteristic is:positive over negative,moving through hardship strongly in the contradictions;the characteristic in each stage is:focus on the moment,selective attention and overlook;main tendency:the stress level gets weakened and stabilized,coping ability gets improved and maturer.Based on the above conclusions,this paper makes the following suggestions to how to help the mothers of deaf children with cochlea implantation to cope with stress and prevent the harm from stress:first,the individual efforts,which include timely self-adjustment,seeking help positively;secondly,the improvement of family level,which includes solid emotional support,building rational attitude,the formation of an effective way of interaction;at last,the support of the society,which includes the provision of scientific psychological counseling,improve the welfare system,make up for the gap of the information resources,improve the education and medical level and enhance public acceptance.
