English is an important communicative media between nations;therefore,English learning has been paid a lot of attentions on by the government, schools, parents and the students themselves. In China, primary school pupils start to learn English when they just start the schooling and the learning of oral English is especially significant for them.Sometimes the English classes at school can't meet the requirements of some students' desire of grasping more of the language and the school curriculum can't increase any more contents. Then these energetic learners will seek the language learning opportunities elsewhere--the foreign language training schools, which is nearly a trend of the time now.In most situations, students' oral English performances are the reflection of their oral English ability.English teaching in public schools is more teacher-centered and the learning is passive while the language training schools provide the students with more active and attractive teaching methods and learning environment.Although there are such differences,English training schools and public schools play different roles in students' oral English learning. The influential factors, such as the learning skills, teaching skills, teaching environment and teaching materials are also related to students' oral English proficiency. In order to comparatively analyze the different teaching and learning skills between English training schools and public schools, the author adopts questionnaires, classroom observation, interview, and tests in this thesis.169 students from two public schools(School A and School B)and two English training schools(School C and School D),10 teachers from these four schools and 30 parents participated in the questionnaires.Students in grade 5 are the objects of the classroom observation and the tests. The 10 teachers in the questionnaire are also been interviewed. The author finds that the pupils' oral English scores in English training schools are higher than those in public schools. The classroom observation shows that English classes in English training schools are more active with various teaching forms, instructions, games, songs, and body languages, which are in accordance with pupils' characteristics.Basically speaking, each student in the class is willing to speak English and actively integrates into teacher's teaching.Furthermore, the teacher can take initiatives to create an English classroom environment by applying "Stars Award"and “Stickers Award” to make students speak no Chinese,so the class is "student centered".On the contrary, most public school English teachers adopt the Lecture andGrammar Translation teaching method which results in rather dull learning atmosphere and “teacher centered" teaching method. In such classes students seldom have opportunities to speak English and the occasional classroom questions are in Chinese instead.Oral English practice in class is usually group works;however, few teachers are willing to use English in the communication with the pupils.Based on the data collected from the research, the thesis consists of five parts. In the first part the research background, significance and purpose are introduced;the second part focuses on the theoretical bases and related researches at home and abroad;the third part reveals the research methodologies;the fourth part analyzes the data collected from the researches and some practical suggestions to the oral English teaching both in public schools and training schools, which is also the core of the whole thesis and the fifth part is the conclusion.
