Grammar plays an important role in English learning.As an essential part of language knowledge,grammar learning has a great value in the promotion of learners' comprehensive ability for language use.However,grammar teaching has always been one of the most controversial aspects in language teaching.Nowadays,the debate on grammar teaching is no longer aimed at whether we should teach grammar or not but to recognize the significance of grammar and think about how to teach it effectively.There are two long-existing common problems in grammar teaching.One is the poor quality and effect.Grammar teaching and practice can not ensure that students do well in oral communication and writing.They still have difficulty in applying what they have learned in class.The other problem of grammar teaching is that most students think grammar and grammar teaching are boring.The lack of interest also leads to the low learning efficiency and is not conductive to English learning.English grammar teaching in China is still in the stage of constant explorations and reforms.In junior middle schools,due to the teachers' different understanding of the curriculum and their different grammar concepts,English grammar teaching has gone to two extremes: one is to continue the traditional grammar teaching to explain the isolated grammar rules;the other is to weaken or even ignore the systematic grammar teaching.These kinds of teaching cannot stimulate students' interest in learning English grammar.In addition,in English learning,most students can not appropriately,accurately and flexibly use grammar rules for oral communication and writing.The effect of grammar teaching is not ideal.Aiming at these two problems,this study attempts to apply Larsen-Freeman's three-dimensional grammar framework to the grammar teaching in junior middle school to improve the effectiveness of grammar teaching from three aspects: form,meaning and use.At the sametime,combined with Penny Ur's grammar classroom activities teaching model,this research tries to increase the interest of grammar teaching through a variety of teaching activities.Therefore,this paper hopes to test the effectiveness of the activity-based three-dimensional grammar teaching model in junior middle school English grammar teaching through an experimental research.The research was designed to answer the following two questions:1)Does the activity-based three-dimensional grammar teaching model effectively stimulate students' grammar learning interest and participation in grammar classes?2)Does the activity-based three-dimensional grammar teaching model effectively help to facilitate students' grammar learning performance and overall English achievement?In this research,98 students from two parallel classes in Grade 9 of Beizhang Middle School in Xinjiang County,Shanxi Province were selected as the research subjects.The experiment lasted for two months(2016.9.12-2016.11.11).During the period,the activity-based three-dimensional grammar teaching model was adopted in the experimental class while the original traditional grammar teaching model was used in the control class.And the two classes were taught with the same grammar contents.The results of the experiment were tested by qualitative and quantitative analysis with the data collected from the four kinds of instruments--language tests,questionnaires,classroom observation and interviews.The differences of students' overall level of English before and after the experiment were tested according to the final term English exam scores of the previous semester and the present semester.The experimental data were analyzed mainly by SPSS 17.0.The research results show that the activity-based three-dimensional grammar teaching model has a significant effect on the improvement of students' grammar scores and English scores.At the same time,it can stimulate students' interest and motivation in grammar learning,and activate their participation in classroom teaching.Thus,it can be seen that the activity-based three-dimensional grammar teaching mode is helpful for junior middle school students to learn and use English grammar.Behind the advantages of the new grammar teaching model,teachers and students are also faced with great challenges.The use of three-dimensional grammar framework and activity teaching as the main form of classroom design model provides a new perspective anduseful reference for junior middle school English grammar teaching and researches.
