With the implementation of the one-child policy and the boosting of urbanization, rural primary and secondary schools in China appeared problems such as scattered layout, students lack, poor quality, etc.Meanwhile,in order to integrate educational resources, pursue economies of scale and improve the quality of education, the school merger program becomes a common choice of education policy and education practice. In order to solve the problem of being far away from home, boarding schools become an important form of rural schools management in our country. At the same time, boarding schools' impacting on students' development has bacome the focus of the academic circles. However, the existing researches still exist many disputes about boarding schools' impacts on students' development. They often have small sample size,a single research method and limited external validity, remaining to be further improved.Based on the database of "rural junior high schools' teaching and learning situation research project in Henan" from REAP and CCAP as well as ICARE,this study makes boarding schools' impact on students' development in rural junior middle schools as a starting point, and uses data collection methods including the questionnaire method, the interview method, the test method,as well as data analysis methods including the quasi-experimental method, the fixed effects method, the regulating effect method, the mediation effect method. This study carries on an empirical research with a large sample around three aspects including “the specific impacts of the boarding system on students' development in rural junior high schools”,“the differences of the boarding system's impacting on different students” and “the channels of the boarding system's impacting on students' development”.The results are as follows. The boarding system has significant positive influence on students' cognitive ability development and has no significant effect on students' non-cognitive ability development in rural junior high schools. The impacts of the boarding system on academic performances don't differ significantly among students with different grades and have significant differences between the students with different genders, different left-behind situations and different family economic conditions.Namely, the boarding system has more positive influence on academic performances of boys,left-behind students and the students with more family economic capital.Communication between peers plays a partial intermediary role between boarding and students' development. While communication between teachers and students doesn't play an intermediary role between boarding and students' development.Based on discussions and analyses, this study puts forward the following suggestions for the results.Strengthening the cooperation between parents and schools to pay more attention to non-cognitive factors of boarders.Boarding schools should advocate to teach students in accordance of their aptitudes and conduct dormitory administration according to students' situations.More communication between teachers and students and more effective guidance from teachers are needed for boarders.
