Vocabulary is a fundamental element of the English language,which lays the foundation of English learning.New English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School(here refers to New Standards)issued in 2003 by Ministry of Education not only requires to command a larger number of vocabulary,but also the capacity of using it.As a result,how to help the learners accumulate vocabulary effectively is of vital importance.At present,the Model of Guided Learning Plan gains its popularity,which regards guided learning plans as a carrier and guided learning as the approach.It is a model,in which teachers guide the students while students learn automatically,and teachers and students cooperate together to finish the teaching tasks.The model has its own advantages.The research has tried to explore with two hypotheses.One is that compared to approaches used in traditional English vocabulary teaching,the vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan can better help to improve the ability to use vocabulary.The other is that compared with traditional English vocabulary teaching approaches,the vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan can better improve the students' ability of autonomous learning.Considering the current situations of vocabulary teaching existing in senior high school,the author has conducted an experiment which is based on Constructivism with the cooperation of Class 6 and Class 7 from Grade One of YiChun High School in JiangXi Province.By the way,Class 6 with 63 students is the controlled class while Class 7 with 65 students is the experimental class.During the experiment,the Model of Guided Learning Plan was used in the experimental class to teach vocabulary,in which teachers design the guided plans based on the teaching requirements and the actual circumstances of the students.Besides,teachers were required to perform the classroom teaching with six steps,that is,"leading in,thinking,discussing,presenting,evaluating and testing".However,the controlled class still adopted the former teaching ways with traditional teaching approaches.The experiment which started in the early March and ended in the late June in 2006 lasted nearly 4 months.The author did the English vocabulary teaching and learning experiment by means of testing the ability of using vocabulary as well as questionnaires to research the autonomous learning before and after the experiment.Then the author interviewed the teachers about the vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan.Finally,the author collected the data and made an analysis.The data show that students in experimental class got better grades in the testing of the ability of using vocabulary compared with the students in controlled class after nearly 4 months of vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan.Besides,the students in experimental class also did better in the research of students' autonomous learning.The study has revealed that compared to the approaches used in traditional English vocabulary teaching,the English vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan can better improve the students' ability to use vocabulary and foster their ability of autonomous learning.At last,based on the teaching practice,the research summarizes the interview of the teachers involved in the vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan to give advice on how to better utilize the vocabulary teaching under the Model of Guided Learning Plan to get better results of vocabulary teaching and learning.
