After specific demands for the ability of autonomous learning are put forward by Compulsory education of primary school English new curriculum standard,we are aware that autonomous learning outside the classroom is very important if we want to improve the elementary students' English level.However,at present in domestic English class,they are dominated by teachers but not the students.This situation must be changed.The related research at home and abroad about elementary school students' English autonomous learning mainly focus on the importance of the awareness and competence of autonomous learning and how to cultivate the ability of English autonomous learning.Although the research shows the correlation between their English course grade and the ability of elementary students' autonomous learning,the students' concept of English autonomous learning and the present investigation of the ability of English autonomous learning is very little.Five representative elementary schools in Zhongshan participated in the related study.It also discussed the effect of their gender and their classes on their concept and competence of autonomous learning.The results show that the English autonomous learning attitude of the Grade-six students in Zhongshan is very strong,and most of them have a correct attitude towards English learning.They are also fully aware of the importance of autonomous English learning.However,students' autonomous English learning ability is at a low level.Especially it's poor in the choice of the right learning methods strategy.Students learn English more passive and lack of initiative.There are significant differences in students' English autonomous learning ability in gender and class.It's that the girls' autonomous learning ability is obviously higher than that of boys,and the ability of autonomous learning of excellent students is significantly higher than that of backward students.According to the results of the research,the author puts forward some suggestions and countermeasures on how to cultivate the students' English autonomous learning ability,which provides a certain reference and suggestion.
