The aim of the study is to explore a new thinking on autonomous learning insenior high school English teaching. The focus of the study is to introduceautonomous learning theory to the English classroom teaching so as to teach studentsin high school level skills about autonomous learning strategies. The author pays aspecial attention to these teaching strategies in the hope that they will stimulatestudents’ interest in learning, enable students to take an active part in learning Englishand eventually become genuine autonomous learners. The new English Syllabus has make it clear that" pay attention to cultivating thestudents’ independence, autonomy, guiding students to question". Because of theteachers’ traditional educational teaching ideas and backward teaching methods, students lack of initiative, lack of sense of participation and subjective consciousness.though most students are aware of the importance of learning strategies in EnglishLanguage learning, yet they do not know how to effectively use learning strategies.Based on the above mentioned, the current things about senior high school Englishteaching is not optimistic. So the author thinks there is a great need of carrying outautonomous learning in senior high schools. In this paper, the author first introduces some related concepts on autonomouslearning, and then reviews the studies concerning autonomous learning teachingabroad and at home. From the angle of reforming English teaching and learning insenior high school, the author discusses the importance of fostering the students’autonomous leaning ability, and describes the research methods in the study. Theauthor also defines the "autonomous learning" from psychological point of view, language learning and cultural context in China, and explored and discussed the theoretical foundation on psychology and pedagogy on which autonomous learningbased. The author chose two average classes in this experimental study. The teachingmaterials are the textbooks of senior high English for China, Student’s books(published by Beijing Normal University) Module1and Module2. According toautonomous learning theory, the author optimized the teaching and learning design forEnglish autonomous learning classroom teaching so as to include as many activities aspossible to meet needs for students to stimulate their interest in learning English. Atthe same time, a questionnaire was carried out to test the distribution about thestudents’ autonomous learning ability, after the experiment is over, the author makecomparisons about the students’ grades between the pre-test and the post-test and getthe result. On basis of analyzing the results of the experiment and teaching practice, the author believes that the autonomous learning English (learning first. teaching latermodel) is better than traditional English classroom teaching model. We should notethe following problems about teaching and learning in senior high schools: how tocarry out our daily teaching under the guidance of the theory of autonomous leaningand How to inspire students’ interest in autonomous learning, how to encourageteachers to change their traditional educational concepts and explore new ways ofteaching and put them into teaching practice so as to meet the needs for the teachers’teaching and the students’ study, they are also the fields that the author will study inthe future.
