Quality of thinking is one of the key competencies for the subject of English. As an indispensable part of English education, reading teaching is an important way to cultivate students’ qualities of thinking. There are some researches about students’thinking qualities cultivation. Some of them concentrate on one quality of thinking such as creative thinking. Others are about students’ several thinking qualities cultivation. In order to give some suggestions on choosing the suitable cultivation mode, the author designed two reading lessons, one is to cultivate students’ critical thinking and the other one is the cultivation of students’ several thinking qualities.Then a comparison is made between single and mixed cultivation of students’thinking qualities.The students are from one class in ** Middle school in Tianjin. In order to fully evaluate the instructional designs, the author interviewed three students after class,collected students’ written feedback and also advisors’ oral feedback. According to the self-reflection and the feedback, compared with normal reading lessons,thinking-type reading lessons take more time to do the instructional designs and are more difficult. Besides, in the practical teaching, students’ English language level and thinking levels are mismatching in both cultivation modes. Students have more difficulties in the lesson of critical thinking integration.Through the analysis of the two instructional designs and their implementations,the author tried to provide some complete teaching cases and also some suggestions.In the aspect of instructional designs, teachers should improve their qualities of thinking and then they can find out the suitable teaching content which is appropriate to develop students’ thinking qualities. Besides, in order to ensure the completion of teaching tasks, teachers need to presuppose enough time that students need to think and express. In the aspect of the practical teaching, teachers need to make the classroom atmosphere more relaxing then students can have a comfortable environment to think.
