Research objectives:Fancy rope skipping,as an emerging physical exercise,is less time-consuming,more energyconsuming,body-building,entertaining,ornamental and competitive.It plays an important role in physical and mental relaxation,learning interest arousing and physical health maintaining.In recent years,the athletic ability and physique of youngsters in China have been declining.Therefore,this study attempts to explore the effect of fancy rope skipping on the physical and mental health of elementary school students so as to provide references for the school-based curriculum development on fancy rope skipping and finally to promote the healthy growth of students.Research methods:In this research,experimental method and questionnaire survey are used to test and investigate 84 elementary school students of Chen Xiang Nine-year School in Sujiatun District,and Ka Wah School in Nanxin District of Shenyang city.And then,the data are collected and analyzed.Research results:Physical health: the experimental group shows significance differences in height and weight(P<0.05),while the control group shows no significant difference in these two aspects(P> 0.05).Both the experimental group(P <0.01)and the control group(P <0.05)show a significant difference in vital capacity.However,neither the experimental group nor the control group shows difference(P>0.05)in quiet heart rate.The mean value of the experimental group changes significantly than that of the control group.Besides,the experimental group shows a very significant difference(P<0.01)in sit-and-reach,standing long jump,50 m dash and 50×8 shuttle run.Mental health:the experimental group shows a very significant difference(P<0.01)in athletic skills,appearance,physical vigor,endurance,body harmony,body-worthiness and overall self-esteem,and a significant difference(P<0.05)in physical attraction,speed and flexibility.The variation of the experimental group in athletic skills,appearance and endurance significantly differs(P<0.01)from that of the control group and the variation in body harmony,body-worthiness and overall selfesteem of the experimental group is greater(P<0.05)than that of the control group.After ropeskipping training,the correlation between students' five dimensions of novelty,challenge,attention,exploration and sense of pleasure and the overall interests is gradually enhanced,in which the sense of pleasure has the most significant correlation with the overall interests.In addition,there is a very significant difference(P<0.01)in novelty,sense of pleasure,attention,overall interests and exploration,and a significant difference(P<0.05)in challenge.Conclusion:After 12 weeks of fancy rope skipping practice,the students show obvious changes in height and weight.the activity level of thoracic muscles of the primary school students increases,and their thoracic volume enlarges as well.The vital capacity as well as heart and lung functions have also been improved.Moreover,students' physical quality in leg-muscle explosive power and exercise tolerance has been greatly improved.At the same time,fancy rope skipping is proved to be able to arouse students' learning interest,increase their feeling of pleasure as well as self-confidence.Therefore,their physical self-esteem has been increased naturally.
