If first-generation high school students are defined as their parents who never attended high schools from their families to earn a degree, then the fact that more than 70% of first-generation students highlights the achievements of the Chinese education system, whereas results in a prominent issue coming to attention. We learned that sense of responsibility from first generation students,is more apparent when compared to non-first generation high school students, which stresses the importance of improving responsibility towards the entire college student's community. The effect of this issue shouldn't be underestimated since it has been highlighted many times by the central government from 18 th National People's Congress to reach the educational goal eventually.Marx's theory of human nature stresses the importance of the social component, influenced by biological, environmental, and educational factors.Emphasizing social responsibility is the purpose for obtaining an education, but we learned that parents whose children are the first to attend University lack a sense of social responsibility outside of ensuring their children earn a degree.Through our surveys and interviews,we learned the lack of education of the family,as a whole, plays an important role in the externalization of social responsibility among first-generation families. In addition, the current examination-oriented education tends to exacerbate the situation by minimizing the focus on social responsibility.Instead,first-generation families reorient their focus on improving the test-performance of their children. This kind of emphasis on test taking has led to first-generation students to be less concerned about social responsibility. The influx of these students thus has influenced the social environment in universities. Therefore,Universities should in turn promote and strengthen a sense of social responsibility among its students. The first and foremost step to overcome this apathy is to reinforce the link between education received at home and at school.Students and parents should engage in learning together, especially in first-generation families,to internalize the goal and purpose of higher education.
