With the establishment and whole-scale implementation of quality education and lifelong education, the reform of Physical Education(P.E.)at school has been intensified. As the majority of educators and teaching staff place extra attention to P.E.for students,P.E.as an additional course has become an indispensable constituent of Physical Education on campus and students in primary and middle school are strongly encouraged to participate in sports activities for an hour every day.Through the implementation of P.E.as an additional course,it helps to enhance the physical fitness and all-round development of students. The popularity of sports activities on campus can be increased while students' proactivity and interests in learning are also stimulated to a large extent, which aligns with the goal of education of schools.Sanshui,Foshan,is one of the most dynamic and promising regions in China in terms of economic development. It enjoys abundant education resources and an advantage of pleasant climate. As a vital element of school education,P.E.has been increasingly eye-catching for all parents and the general public as well. Therefore, the author conducted an investigative study on primary school P.E.class as an additional course in Sanshui,Foshan. This paper involves documentary and literature review, and statistical analysis as well as logical analysis of the results obtained through the channels of questionnaire, observation and interview. The main subject of this study was primary school students in Sanshui,Foshan. The study acquired information regarding the overall situation of P.E.additional course in all schools by focusing on the implementation of P.E.as an additional course, situation of P.E.educators,students' participations, parents' awareness of P.E.as an additional course,as well as finance and funding of sports amenities and equipment. With analysis, factors affecting the development of P.E.additional course are revealed, and some issues for improvement are also uncovered in this paper. Finally, corresponding solutions and strategies are provided to improve the implementation of P.E.additional course. Conclusions of the study are listed as follows:(1)An optimistic implementation of P.E class as an additional course was observed for all primary schools in Sanshui,Foshan in general, with no one being an exception.Class frequency and class meeting time were reasonably set and students' needs were basically catered to with different types of sports activities, appropriate teaching contents, proper class size and satisfactory students' participation. However, sports activities mainly included soccer, basketball and aerobics etc.Attention in swimming and some other new activities was lacking.(2)It is found that evaluation and assessment of teachers responsible for P.E.additional course were missing. The monitor and supervision were spontaneous and somewhat random, not well structured and planned. On the other hand, students did gain evaluations from teachers, but with limited assessment methods.(3)A proper number of resources have been allocated to P.E.additional course with the joint contributions from schools and society.Half of the teachers giving P.E.additional course took an appropriate amount of workload while a small part of them suffered from relatively big workload.70% of the teachers were paid the same salary as other P.E.teachers.Hence,the mismatch between salary and work responsibility compromised the incentives of teachers for P.E.additional course.(4)Teachers for P.E.additional course placed emphasis on the class but that was not the case for school authorities.(5)Students displayed activeness and enthusiasm towards P.E.additional course.Students who did not join P.E.additional course, were too occupied by loads of schoolwork aside from other additional courses they took.(6)Parents thought positively about the P.E.additional course and expressed supportiveness of their kids' joining the class.Nonetheless, some of them were concerned that their kids' grade of schoolwork would be affected due to the participation of P.E.additional course.(7)While there was adequate basic equipment for successful implementation of P.E.additional course,a shortage of funding and sports amenities were the problems for most schools.(8)There were 3 factors that impacted the P.E.additional course: the lack of attention from school authorities, the lack of attention from senior management of the schools, and the shortage of class venues.
