Emotion is an indispensable element in language teaching.Instructors who use “emotion” can improve the effect of language teaching, which in turn helps pupils foster a positive and healthy learning emotion. As one of the significant emotional factors, motivation can provide learning stimulus and generate right directions for pupils. Most pupils in rural primary schools are short of English learning motivation, because they learn English for “learning” purpose only. How to inspire pupils' English learning motivation by proper teaching strategies is a challenge for all instructors in rural primary schools and this research as well. This thesis mainly focuses on English learning motivation and its connection with English achievement in rural primary schools. The researcher used one year to study the present situation of English learning motivation and its influence on English achievement. The researcher made a survey about the current status of English learning motivation in a rural primary school——Guang Yuan Xiaoxin Primary School by using the inner connection among intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation and achievement motivation.Trough giving out questionnaires and making interviews to all the pupils in the fourth grade, the researcher aimed at finding answers to the following two questions: what is the current status of English learning motivation in rural primary schools? What strategies should be adopted to inspire pupils' English learning motivation in rural primary schools? To answer these questions, the researcher collected the third grade pupils' grades of the second term as a reference data. The questionnaire for the forth grade pupils was conducted in the beginning of the first term to find out the current status of English learning motivation in rural primary schools.According to the outcomes of questionnaires and interviews, the researcher proposed new motivational strategies and used them through the first term of Grade four. Then the researcher collected the final exam grades of Grade four, and compared the old and new data to analysis the significance between English learning motivation and English achievement.Through data analysis of questionnaires, interviews and English achievements of pre-test and post-test,it showed that there were some problems with English learning motivation in rural primary schools. The pupils had low motivation intensity.Their extrinsic motivation was higher than that of intrinsic motivation. However, their achievement motivation was good.Comparison of these data demonstrated that pupils' English learning motivation had an evident improvement in the one-term experiment. As proper motivational strategies were used in teaching, pupils' idle attitude towards English learning was reduced. The pupils' English achievement was improved greatly as their English learning motivation increased. Moreover, positive emotional attitude is a vital motivational strategy.Intrinsic motivation is necessary but external motivation cannot be neglected and neither of them should be overused. The consistency of adopting proper teaching strategies on English learning motivation maintenance is significant.
