Good English,the original textbook is Oxford Reading Tree,which is used as the extensive teaching material is applied by more and more schools.The author is lucky to be one of the first teachers to apply the textbook in the school.110 students and 3 teachers from Guilin Baoxian Junior Middle School which the author works for are chosen to be the research subjects.The purpose of this research tries to answer the questions as follows:1)How is the status quo of student engagement in extensive reading class?2)What are the influencing factors in student engagement?The research aims at exploring approaches to stimulate student engagement actively.Through the approaches of questionnaire,classroom observations and interviews,we know the major findings as follows:1)In the junior English extensive reading teaching,juniors are performing better in behavioral engagement,cognitive engagement and emotional engagement.Students do not learn English by simply mechanically memorizing words and doing exercises any more.Instead,students learn English by taking part in teaching activities.And as for amusement and accomplishment,all average values are above 3.0,which mean most students feel the sense of accomplishment and amusement in classroom engagement.The main reason is the teacher creates an authentic language environment and designs and performs various teaching activities.2)According to the survey,we learn that there are significant differences between learning achievements and behavioral engagement.Excellent students have a higher level of concentration and endeavor than those at average and below average.And a connection is shared among different personalities,behavioral and emotional engagement,all of which are subject to students themselves.But objectively speaking,the teaching materials and the domination of teachers in the extensive reading teaching promote the student engagement.Basing on the research results and focusing on the status quo of student engagement,the author gives teachers some suggestions:1)To choose teaching material reasonably for stimulating students' interests.2)To improve teaching designs for better and more active students' engagement in the classroom.3)To develop harmonious relationships between teachers and students and facilitate a friendly environment of participating.4)To help students lay a solid English foundation and boost their confidence to participate.Overall,students should seize the opportunity to engage in different kinds of activities with their classmates and improve their confidence,self-efficacy and learning abilities.All in all,many analysis and consideration are based on the author's own thoughts which will be subjective.Because the academic experience is not good enough,a lot of improvements remain to be improved in the future.Among nearly 200 schools who set Good English as the teaching materials,the results are only based on the teachers and students in the author's school and are not broadly representative.What is more,the observe tool is limited,while observing in the class it's easy for the author to be absorbed in teaching method or teachers' performance.However,the author finds a topic worthy to be researched that is to observe teachers' language features.Different language features make a big difference in student engagement.In the future research,researchers can pay attention to the corrections between teachers'language features and student engagement which includes involvement,communication,critical thinking,moods and knowledge construction.The research will impel teachers to promote the student engagement actively.The research on student engagement will be done better and better.
