Listening and speaking are the two most important aspects in learning English.However,due to the lack of English language environment in China,how to improve the effectiveness of English teaching in listening and speaking has become an eternal topic.According to the new English curriculum standard of compulsory education,which was published in 2011,as a language in application,how to cultivate students' interest in English learning and language communication ability is particularly important.Although English teachers work hard in cultivating students' ability of listening and speaking while teaching,there are still some students who dare not open their mouth to speak English in front of others.The main purpose of this research is to know the influences on students in listening and speaking English in Grade Six,so that students can lay a solid foundation for English learning in middle schools.This paper is divided into six chapters.Chapter One introduces the objectives and the significance.Chapter Two is literature review,which mainly expounds the definition of situational teaching,the present situation of “situational teaching” at home and abroad,and the theoretical basis of situational teaching: constructivism theory,language acquisition theory,and psychological theory.Chapter Three introduces the application of situational teaching in Grade Six,and illustrates the strategies of the situational teaching method in English listening and speaking class,for example,role-play,simulation,pictures,multi-media technology,games,and language.Chapter Four is the research on application of situational teaching method in listening and speaking in Grade Six.This research is based on a survey of students in a middle school in Harbin.82 students in two classes take part in the research.In order to get a more reliable result,the author uses two strategies: questionnaire survey by 82 students and interview survey by 15 students in experimental class.Chapter Five focuses on the conclusion of situational teaching method in English listening and speaking class.Chapter Six is the conclusion.It discusses the enlightenment of situational teaching method,the disadvantages of the research,and the necessity of application of situational teaching method.The creation of situation plays an important role in listening and speaking class.The situational teaching method is widely used in English listening and speaking class,which is beneficial to the improvement of students' listening and speaking ability.
