As the linkage between elementary mathematics and junior high school mathematics,the algebraic expression lays the root for function studies in junior high school compulsory education.According to a report,the author finds that junior high school students have troubles in the studies of algebraic expressions,which is evidenced by a lack of arithmetic capability and the problem solving skills.Showing such backward traces,the underachievers(commonly known as poor students)fail to catch up with their classmates in moral consciousness and academic records.However they are able to enhance their performance through endeavors and the assistance of teachers.Therefore it is of significance and necessity to investigate and research on the difficulties for the underachievers to acquire algebraic expressions.The first part is to raise a question.This essay discusses the significance to employ an investigation and analysis on the difficulties for the underachievers to acquire algebraic expressions through the following three dimensions: the importance of algebraic expressions,the requirements of arithmetic capability in Xinkebiao(New Curriculum)Series,and the challenges for the underachievers to learn algebraic expressions.The second part is the research background.Through literature review,the author finds that previous studies mainly focus on the learning difficulties for algebra learners.Nevertheless,based upon the 3 representations of algebraic expressions,this essay is directed against the underachievers of junior high school.It further employs an investigation and analysis on the challenges for algebraic expression learners and the causes through schema theory,mathematical knowledge representation,and theory of learning movement in mathematics.The third part is the survey design and method.The fourth part is the research result and the concerning analysis.Through data processing,it is concluded that the challenges for algebraic expression learners are derived from:(1)A lack of understanding of basic concepts.(2)A lack of understanding of the significance of the letters.(3)The weakness in knowledge utilization on problems.The fifth part is directed against the challenges in algebraic studies and the causes,putting forward recommendations on future studies and the adjustment in mentality of the underachievers.Beyond that,it brings forward some individual proposals on the teaching methods of teachers and the approaches to change the mindset of underachievers.Firstly,it analyzes the causes of the challenges for underachievers:(1)A lack of basic knowledge and a poor arithmetic capability.(2)The weakness in reading comprehension and representation ability.(3)A lack of correct problem-solving habits.Here are some recommendations for the underachievers:(1)To understand and remember basic concepts.(2)Realize the algebraic expression structure and understand the meaning of the letters.(3)To improve myself operation skills.(4)The ability to strengthen its characterization.The following are the recommendations for the teachers:(1)Cultivate the students' problem-solving ability.(2)Nurture the students' habits of retrospect and summery.(3)Enable them with analogy.The last part is the conclusions and outlook.
