In English teaching,the improvement of listening ability is essential to the all-round development of students' language competence.In recent years,listening comprehension has been an important part of English teaching in senior high schools.Among the four basic language skills of listening,speaking,reading and writing,listening is the basis of English learning,but it is also regarded as the most difficult one by the students.However,there are many problems in traditional English listening teaching in senior high schools.Many high school students spend a lot of time on their daily study,but they have failed to gain satisfactory effect.On the basis of Krashen's Acquisition Theory and Context Theory,the author of this thesis made an experimental study of adopting American TV series as teaching materials to cultivate senior high school students' English listening ability.This experimental study is aimed to resolve two problems:1.Is it feasible to conduct English listening teaching with American TV series in high schools?2.Is English listening teaching with American TV series more helpful to promote high school students' English listening ability than the traditional English listening teaching?In order to testify the feasibility and effectiveness of applying American TV Series to high school English listening teaching,the author of this thesis carried out the experimental study in the form of questionnaire,pretest and post-test among 100 students of two parallel classes in Grade One from Taishan Middle School.The contents of the questionnaire include the current situation of students' listening,the problems that students meet in listening practice,and students' attitudes towards the application of American TV series to English listening teaching.At the same time,the two classes were arranged respectively as the experimental class and the control class.In order to test the effects of the experimental teaching,two test papers were respectively used in the pretest and post-test for the participants.Finally,the author of this thesis analyzed the data collected from the questionnaire,pretest and post-test,intending to prove the effectiveness of improving high school students' English listening ability by applying American TV series to listening teaching.Compared with the traditional English listening teaching materials,English listening teaching with American TV series can achieve better effects in terms of promoting senior high school students' listening ability.
