With the development of economic globalization,English language,as a communication tool,becomes highly important,and more attention has been paid to English teaching.However,the language-oriented teaching falls short of enabling learners to communicate with people from different countries.It is necessary to boost the study of cultural knowledge contained in linguistic knowledge and improve students’ awareness and ability of intercultural communication.Under the current situation,this cultural knowledge is no longer limited to the knowledge about target language countries,but also refers to that of the native language culture of students.The current high school English teaching,however,is exam-oriented education and emphasizes the language while giving insufficient attention to Students’ native language culture.In other words,teachers focus only on English language learning,while ignoring their native language culture in English teaching,thus compromising students’ ability to express their native language culture in English.Therefore,this study is aimed at investigating the status quo of high school students’ ability to express their native language culture in English,the status of cultural introduction in English teaching,and the problems existing in the expression of native language culture in English of high school students and their reasons,thereby providing some feasible suggestions for high school English teaching.In this study,500 students from L School in Guangxi were selected as the subjects.The questionnaires and tests were adopted to investigate the status quo of high school students’ ability to express their native language culture in English.It was revealed that high school students’ ability to express their native language culture in English has no reason to be optimistic.However,students show their desires and needs to learn their mother tongue culture in the process of English learning and acquire the ability to express their native language culture in English and conduct intercultural communication.The fact that the students have poor ability to express their native language culture in English Could be attributed to the following reasons:drawbacks of the exam-oriented education and examination system,limitations of the contents of teaching materials and the school conditions,teachers’ lack of guidance for high school students to express their native language culture in English,and the lack of practice among students.Based on the analysis of the status quo of the cultural introduction in English teaching and its reasons,this author proposes some suggestions by considering the actual situation and referring to related literature:strengthening students’ oral language skills;training English teachers about bilingual cultural awareness;understanding Chinese and foreign cultural background;creating a relaxing learning atmosphere.
