The standard of high school English curriculum emphasizes that English teaching should promote “students' ability of independent learning and Cooperative Learning”.In English reading teaching,“student-centered” group learning method is adopted to improve students interest and self-confidence in English learning,and to promote students self-improvement through mutual communication and cooperation.However,at present,many teachers in rural areas still adopt the traditional“cramming” single English reading teaching method,which seriously stifles students' enthusiasm for English language learning.It is an urgent problem to seek new ways to reform the teaching of English reading in rural areas and improve the reading level of high school students in rural areas.Therefore,based on constructivism learning theory and the theory of Proximal Development Zone as well as motivation theory.This study adopts the method of quantitative and qualitative research,starting from the actual situation of rural senior high school English reading.With the aims to apply Cooperative Learning to rural senior high school English reading teaching and tries to answers the following three questions: 1.What effects do Cooperative Learning have on rural senior high school students' English reading performance? 2.What effects do Cooperative Learning have on rural senior high school students' English reading interest? 3.Compared with the traditional English reading teaching,what are the characteristics of Cooperative Learning English reading teaching in rural senior high school?In this study,71 freshmen from two classes of rural senior high school were selected as the subjects.One class was randomly select as the experimental class and the other as the control class.The pre-test shows that the English reading level of the two classes is almost the same.In the experimental class,Cooperative Learning is used in reading teaching and traditional teaching is used in the control class.In order to test the effect of Cooperative Learning on students' reading achievement,after the experiment,the students' reading level was measured.At the same time,questionnaires and interviews were used to understand the changes of students' English learning achievement,interest and attitude with the guidance of Cooperative Learning method.SPSS 19.0 was used to make statistics and analysis.The results of this study are as follows: 1.The English reading performance of the experimental class is higher than that of the control class,which shows that the Cooperative Learning teaching method in the English reading teaching could improve the learning performance of rural high school students.2.Students have a positive attitude towards Cooperative Learning teaching methods.They have strong motivation for learning during the reading process,actively cooperate,and have great interest in learning.3.Compared with traditional English reading teaching,the distinctive characteristics of Cooperative Learning English reading teaching in rural senior high are that take students as the center and enhance students' self-learning ability as well as pay attention to improving students' Core Competencies.
