The English reading lesson as an important lesson type plays an important role in fostering students'reading ability. How to teach English reading effectively has become an urgent problem that the teachers need to solve. High School English Curriculum Standards proposes that the high school English courses should further develop students'abilities of gathering and handling information, analyzing and solving problems in English on the basis of enhancing students'integrated language capability. Whether the course objective could be achieved is mainly determined by whether the students'reading capacity can be trained successfully.Students are the center of the reading activities. Their existed background knowledge, experience and affective attitudes greatly influence their reading processes and reading effect. Teachers should instruct students to have a clear idea on the reading objectives and make reading plans according to their practical situation. What's more, the teachers should also guide the students to know that they ought to adjust their reading strategies timely according to different reading tasks and encourage them to make use of various learning resources actively to finish their learning tasks and solve the problems they meet during learning. Some elaborate reading courses have made a very good interpretation of the new teaching beliefs in reading and apply many effective teaching methods. But what are the English reading teaching in the common courses like?This research intends to investigate the current English reading teaching situation of a high school by questionnaire. Through the analysis of the data results, the author finds out the following problems: 1. the reading teaching of high school English reading class is mechanical and inflexible; 2. the teachers mainly focus on the teaching of fundamental language knowledge, while ignoring the training of students'independent reading ability; 3.the teachers mainly rely on their experience in their reading course design.Based on the analysis of the current situation of high school English reading teaching, the author proposes a new reading teaching model. The core of the new model is that students are the center of the whole reading teaching process. In this model the reading teaching will not only be confined to the reading lessons but also extend to the outside of the class. Teachers as the guides need to consider the development of students'independent reading ability from all angles when adopting this new reading teaching model. Teachers should foster students'advanced and eternal reading ability through permeating reading strategies and techniques during the teaching process. This research makes a comparative analysis on the experimental group and the control group by applying this reading model. The results show that the students of the experimental group who adopt the new reading teaching model improve their reading ability dramatically, which indicates the new model can be chosen by the teachers as a kind of reading teaching model. At the same time the author concludes some relevant pedagogical implications, which hopes to provide some valuable suggestions for the high school English teaching.
