Teacher professional development has become one of the themes on teacher education research internationally, and also a key to success in China’s elementary education curriculum reform.Since the 1980 s,fruitful theories on teacher professional development(TPD)have been produced, however, these theories mainly discuss issues of teacher professional development from a single dimension or a perspective, which is difficult to fully disclose the overall outline of teacher’s development.Education and teaching itself is a process full of mutual interaction between person and person, human and environment. The principle of ecology is exactly a science to study the relationships between creatures, including human beings, and the environment. From this new perspective, the teachers,as the main body of education and teaching, struggle and survive on complex conditions.Only by properly handling their relationship with the surrounding environment, and executing cooperative coevolution with the environment can teachers achieve sustainable development. The current English curriculum reform provides the nice opportunity to teachers’ professional development, but there exist more difficulties and challenges in the process of English teachers’ self-development.Thus three questions are to be answered:1)What is the current situation of English teachers’ professional development in high schools?2)What are the major obstacles affecting high school English teachers’ professional development from the perspective of educational ecology?3)What are the realistic approaches to promoting high school English teachers’ professional development from the perspective of educational ecology?Based on teachers’ professional development theory, this study utilizes the combining research methods of literature, questionnaire survey and data analysis.118 effective questionnaires in X Y City,Jiang Su Province are taken back, and then relative data is processed by SPSS19.0 to help understand the current situation of high school English teachers’ professional development and major obstacles. The results of this research are as follows:(1)From the point of view of teachers’ belief and attitude, their satisfaction to the working environment is highly correlated to attitudes to the job as well as the reason to choose the job.(2)There exists ecological imbalance between the external environment and internal environment of English teachers’ professional development, such as simplification to the evaluation of teachers, imbalance of teacher training and teacher development demand, etc.According to the analysis of the problems,in the ecological environment of high schools, two major ways are put forward to promote the middle school English teachers’ professional development:(1)teacher management: optimize the ecosystem of teacher’s professional development, including the reform of school-based training and building of a competitive teacher culture.(2)teachers’ self-development: active construction of ecological self.
