Technology of transgenic crops is core domain of modern biology in rapid development with widespread influence. Developed countries aim at commanding height of biological technology through substantive investment in funding research to strengthen their international competitiveness in transgenic crops technology. China as a developing great power eager to diminish this considerable wide technology gap with developed countries as a long term objective. To achieve this objective, all-sided technology analysis in depth plays an important role so that Chinese enterprises can develop targeted research fields and make a breakthrough. Therefore, based on Derwent Patent Database, on the perspective of objects and subjects of patents, the research analyzes technological evolution of transgenic crops and competitive situation of enterprises in this industry with qualitative and quantitative research methods. It can offer a comprehensive overview of transgenic crops technology and industry development and serve for Chinese government and enterprises as a reference. The main achievements of this research are as follows:(1) On the perspective of research methods, the research applies the Sequential Clustering in time sequence to inter-related technology process. The development of transgenic crops includes four stages-germination, growth, maturation and stationary stage with characteristic hotspots.(2) On the perspective of time series, based on citations of patents, the research establishes technological framework and screens core technology of transgenic crops using minimum spanning tree so that it is easier to compare and contrast transgenic technology.(3) On the perspective of patent subjects, based on the content of patents, the research builds up feature vectors and utilizes clustering methods to divide the institutions into few groups where competitive relationship exists. The research indicates there are five groups between 1983 institutions.
