The mass-scale pig breeding mode has dominated the industry as it offers economies of scale with lower breeding costs and higher profits. Empirical research on the productivity of live pig breeding is growing steadily, but little stress is laid on mass-scale pig breeding. In this respect, analysis of large-scale pig breeding's production efficiency and its factors affecting is necessary. Firstly, the paper depicts the present industrial development of mass-scale pig breeding from cost, management, and industry evolution perspectives. It points out that the productivity of mass-scale pig breeding should be improved given its high risk, high cost and growing proportion in the industry. Secondly, it employs the DEA method to analyze the production efficiency of mass-scale pig breeding in China with respect to both geography and time, and concludes that the total factor productivity of mass-scale pig breeding has moved steadily upward, in which movement technological innovation has played an important role. Thirdly, it analyzes the factors affecting the productivity of mass-scale pig breeding qualitatively and quantitatively, and concludes that the critical factors are feed formula, income structure, pig population and the retail price index. Finally, it proposes that the productivity of mass-scale pig breeding should be improved internally by controlling the breeding scale, upgrading the breeding techniques and improving the management level.
